ROMA: ALMUNIA, REACT STERNLY TO XENOPHOBIC POPULISM

Joaquin Almunia has asked for stern reactions “to the populism that is beginning to border on xenophobia”. At an informal breakfast in Madrid, the EU Commission Vice-President described the Roma expulsions from France as “tragic” and warned that “there is a temptation” on the part of some EU nation governments to resort to “protectionist” and “populist” measures in the face of the credit crunch.
