When partisans killed Mussolini in 1945 they allegedly did so on Winston Churchill’s orders. The British prime minister did not want embarrassing correspondence to be discovered that also revealed Churchill’s admiration for the Italian dictator. This theory, already known in Italy, and that was confirmed in 2004 by the former partisan Bruno Lonati, was presented yesterday by the French historian Pierre Milza .
