Chinese authorities issued an alert in response to the country’s record heatwave. The National Meteorological Centre says that large areas of northern and central China will again be hit by ‘suffocating heat and very little rain’, with temperatures of up to 40 degrees centigrade. An orange, level two alert has been issued, on a scale that goes up to five.
