Gazprom has embarked upon a new round of negotiations with Naftogaz addressed at a joint venture. Rivals until only a few months ago, things changed totally when the new government came to power in the Ukraine and, last April, the Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin expressed the hope that the two groups would merge. Gazprom has explained that before there is a merger there will be a joint venture with the Ukrainian company.
