GERMANY: STUTTGART, FURIOUS PROTESTS AGAINST NEW STATION

Protests are being mounted in Stuttgart against the demolition of the railway station to make way for a megastation. Overnight, seven activists climbed to the top of the north wall of the building, which bulldozers started demolishing yesterday, and are refusing to come down until the Federal Minister for Transport, Peter Ramsauer (CSU) calls a halt to the project. For several weeks now, civil groups have been protesting against the futuristic megaproject, known as “Stuttgart 21” which will transform the terminus in Baden-Wuerttemberg’s capital into a futuristic underground transit station, with a tunnel leading directly to Stuttgart airport and a new high speed line to the city of Ulm, 90 km away.
