The Shiite bloc in Iraq has nominated outgoing Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki as candidate for the premiership. This is a turning point, following over 6 months of political crisis in the wake of the March 7 national elections. The National Alliance comprises Mr. Maliki’s State of Law party, which has 89 seats in Parliament, and the Iran-friendly Iraqi National Alliance.
