New York – The number of poor New Yorkers rose by 7% between 2005 and 2008.
The surge was registered despite federal standards by which the poverty threshold is defined being lowered by 8% over those 3 years, according to a research study conducted by the Women’s Center for Education and Career Advancement.
Notwithstanding a 16% rise in family income, financial needs in order to make ends meet have risen by 20-40%.
