PRISONS: 2,905 ITALIANS ARE DETAINED ABROAD

As many as 2,905 Italians are detained abroad, 63,4% as convicts and 36,6% pending their trial or extradition. The figures updated to 2009 were released by the Foreign Ministry following the death of carpenter Daniele Franceschi who died in the Grasse prison, in France, for reasons which are still unclear. Most of the Italians detained abroad (2,428 or 83.5% of the total, 1,502 convicts and 926 pending trial or extradition) are serving their time in European prisons .
