SCIENCE: REVOLUTIONARY ENZYME FOR BIOFUEL FROM BIOMASS

An enzyme will accelerate (2 hours vs. 48 as of now) the process of fuel extraction from biomass and wood waste, using neither grains nor sugarcane. According to a study published on Science, a team of Norwegian researchers has reported that the new enzyme (extracted from the ‘Serratia marcescenses’ bacterium) can break down chitin, a material similar to wood cellulose, that forms the exoskeleton of crustaceans, such as crabs and lobsters, and insects alike. .
