One of west Africa’s oldest music bands, Senegal’s Ucas Jazz Band, has celebrated its 50th anniversary. The band, whose members are aged between 30 and 72, is well-known for its original sound which can be described as a combination of typical sounds from the country’s southern Casamance province and Cuban rhythms. The name “Ucas” is an acronym and stands for “Union culturelle et artistique de Sedhiou” .
