UILT is to postpone a strike of Tirrenia staff planned for 30 and 31 August. The transport workers union will set a new date after the meeting convened by Transport Minister, Altero Matteoli, for 6 September. General Secretary Giuseppe Caronia, commenting on Matteoli’s decision not to issue a postponement order, said: “Finally a sign of responsibility and respect by the government in relation to the legitimate and sacrosanct struggle of workers in defence of their jobs.” Caronia added that the union would have taken all actions available to it including legal action to fight to such a measure. .
