LONDRA – La chiamano la tycoon del reggiseno, è baronessa e Pari d’Inghilterra, il suo nome è Michelle Mone e si è fatta fotografare in un resort ai Caraibi da 1.500 euro a notte subito dopo aver votato, come membro della Camera dei Lord, una “legge contro i poveri”, cioè un taglio del welfare per i ceti sociali più bassi. Ora è nella bufera, presa di mira anche dai tabloid che hanno fra gli strati popolari i loro lettori di riferimento. Questo è lo scontro di classe – senza sconti – in atto in Gran Bretagna.
Particolare la storia di Michelle, nata Michelle Allan nel 1971 nell’East End di Glasgow, e rimasta “Miss Michelle Allan” fino a 18 anni. Poi, sposandosi si è evoluta in “Mrs Michelle Mone”, nel 2010 in “Mrs Michelle Mone OBE (Order of British Empire)” e quindi nel 2015 “The Right Honourable The Baroness Mone OBE”, dopo essere stata nominata alla Camera dei Lord.
Dopo aver lavorato dall’età di 15 anni come modella, Michelle Mone ha fondato nel 1996 la società MJM international dalla quale è nato Ultimo, brand di biancheria intima molto noto in Gran Bretagna. La sua scalata sociale è arrivata al livello più alto per una che non nasce né da nobili origini né da famiglia importante, ma arriva dalla periferia della Scozia.
Fino al 2009 era tra l’altro un’attiva sostenitrice dei laburisti, finché il premier Gordon Brown non decise di alzare le tasse ai redditi più alti. Michelle Mone accusò Brown di gestire male il bilancio dello Stato, dicendosi “disgustata dall’inettitudine con la quale il governo stava affrontando la crisi”. Nel 2010 il Guardian già la descriveva come “una cresciuta da elettrice protestante del partito Laburista diventata ora elettrice cattolica del partito Conservatore”. Il suo percorso politico in direzione “conservatrice” è continuato con interventi come sui “riot” del 2011 a Londra: “Chi fa casino, ruba e gira a volto coperto merita tolleranza zero”.
Arriva il 27 agosto di quest’anno e David Cameron, fra mille polemiche, decide di far entrare Michelle Mone nella Camera dei Lord. Ed il suo primo voto è proprio il “sì” al provvedimento con cui il governo Cameron vorrebbe togliere i crediti d’imposta alle fasce di reddito più basse, un provvedimento che renderebbe tre milioni di famiglie più povere di 1.800 euro all’anno.
Il taglio non è passato per soli 17 voti, 289 contro 272. Ma il giorno dopo aver votato una misura definita brutale dalla stampa inglese, la Mone ha deciso di volare alle Barbados dove se l’è spassata al resort Sandy Lane bevendo champagne, facendosi il bagno in una spiaggetta riservata e passando ore di relax con il suo nuovo ragazzo (mister Mone è stato giubilato nel 2011), un istruttore di golf, Stefan Soroka.
La popolarità della Mone è ai minimi. Per capirlo basta fare un salto sul suo profilo Twitter, dove la boss di Ultimo ha pubblicato quella che a suo avviso è una frase che dovrebbe motivare chi fa impresa, sul modello del “volere e potere” che impazzava negli anni 80 dopo essere andata tristemente di moda negli anni 30. “Se tu vuoi veramente qualcosa e lavori veramente sodo, non cerchi scuse, sei proattivo, hai un atteggiamento positivo e non molli mai, alla fine ce la farai”.
Risposta dei follower: “Mi prendo cura di mia moglie disabile, lavoro dannatamente sodo per 87 euro alla settimana: spiegami come posso migliorare la mia situazione finanziaria”. E ancora “Le persone lavorano duro! E sono ancora povere!! Come fai a non capirlo?”
